HISD Teacher of the Year Banquet – – Houston Independent School District honors the most outstanding Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year for 2009-2010. Winners are eligible to compete later at the state level. Wednesday 7:00 p.m. (Monday 9:00 a.m.)

Horn Academy Book Club – Students increase their reading skills and reach reading goals through a set number of books with the Horn Academy Book Club. (Monday 9:30 a.m.)

Introduction to Autism-Spectrum Disorders (Part One) – Autism is a neurological disorder affecting one in every 150 children born in 2010. This program focuses on the resources available to families in Harris County. (Monday 2:00 p.m.)

Jump Start to Success: Beyond Letter of the Week – This program explores literacy in the early childhood classroom. Guest Leslie Marquez discusses the importance of teaching letters and sounds in authentic contexts. She also emphasizes the importance of children's interests, rather than a teacher's desire to pass through letters of the alphabet. (Saturday 8:30 a.m., Wednesday 10:30 a.m., Tuesday 11:30 a.m.)

Just Another Middle School Day – Lanier Middle School's drama department puts on a play about the exaggerated events during a typical school day. (Friday 9:00 a.m.)

Kennedy Center for Theater Arts – Performance and discussion centered on the arts and the classics. Featuring Charles Stroud, Ballet Folklorico & “Waiting on Godot”, “Imani Winds', Turtle Beach Quartet' - (Sunday 9:00 a.m.)

Lamar High School Student Theater: The Lion King – Lamar drama school students reenact scenes from “The Lion King” movie with colorful costumes and hijinx. (Monday 1:30 p.m.)

2009 Leadership Conference “Building on What Works” & “Strengthening The World of Work” – Keynote speakers from 2009 Summer Leadership Institute discuss the benefits and methods of implementing Professional Learning Communities in HISD schools. (Wednesday 11:00 a.m., Tuesday 1:00 p.m.)

Making Civics Real – A video workshop for the professional development of high school teachers illustrates a constructivist approach to the teaching of civics, each dedicated t one teacher's multi-part lesson. Developed in collaboration with the National Council for the Social Studies and the Center for Civics Education. (Monday – Wednesday 9:00 p.m.)

Math-A-LeticsA fun and exciting program designed to help K-6 students understand mathematical concepts. (Monday - Sunday 5:00 p.m.)

Meet the Author – Orson Scott Card / Barnes & Noble – Noted authors share their approach to research, writing and publications (Monday 3:30 p.m., Sunday 8:00 p.m.)

My Math PlusA national distance learning program. It represents a collaborative between the Division of Migrant Education of the Texas Education Agency and its receiving states, to increase the educational opportunities for students utilizing interactive distance learning technology. (Sunday 6:00 p.m.)

Name That BookStudents of all ages from HISD schools are taking part in a “battle of the books” that tests both their memory and their reading comprehension skills. They have been reading from lists of up to 45 books provided by HISD Library Services weeks ago and will compete at their various grade levels (Monday 10:00 a.m.)

NASA Education Hour – A variety of shows including daily launches and educational studies (Sunday 1:00 p.m. & Sunday 7:00 p.m.)

News Writing: This series teaches the writing, reporting, editing, and communicating of information in the public interest. More than 100 journalists working in print, radio, and television reveal the secrets of their trade. Among those offering insights are Bob Woodward, Helen Thomas, Dave Barry, and Linda Ellerbee. Coverage of policy issues sheds light on journalism history, law, and ethics. A natural choice for students pursuing journalism or communications, News Writing is also an excellent resource for improving general writing skills, producing a school or university paper, continuing education for working journalist, or teacher professional development. (Friday 2:00 p.m. – Saturday 6:00 p.m.)

Peers Influencing Peers XVI – This 60 minute program features youth in front of and behind the camera. High school age students work on every aspect of the production, the only youth national broadcast in the country. In addition, an original dram, “A Perfect Senior Year”, written by Jesse a high school junior will address the effects on the lives friends and family because of bad decisions made by one senior student, Mike Redding. (Tuesday 2:00 p.m.)

Phiz Biz – (Sunday 8:30 a.m., Tuesday 9:30 a.m., Thursday 12:45 p.m., Friday 12:30 p.m.)

Positively Parents – Produced by the HISD Department of Parent Engagement, the series is designed to strengthen the relationship between parents and the schools. Marybelle Perez will acquaint parents with the various avenues of involvement available throughout the year. (Tuesday 8:30 a.m)

Reach Out to Drop Outs – (Wednesday 8:30 a.m.) A view inside HISD's “Reach Out to Drop Outs” program; an effort to entice dropouts to return to school and complete their educations.

Road Map to Student Success - HISD's Strategic Direction - A program discussing issues related to HISD's long-range goals of student achievement and how to best achieve those goals. (Monday 11:00 a.m., Thursday 9:00 p.m., Saturday 7:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m.)

Sam Houston High School Discussion – Forum involving the community and Dr. Grier discussing the future of Sam Houston High School. (Friday 1:00 p.m.)

Schools That Meet Children Needs – Forum for educators on forming future schools to fit individual children's needs. (Thursday 9:00 a.m.)

Science FactionHands on science lessons for all ages. (Friday 1:30 p.m.)

Shaping the Story – A “how to” presentation training principals, educators, and teachers to become media savvy. (Monday – Thursday 11:15 p.m.)

Student Achievement w/ Paula Harris – Are our HISD graduates prepared for the rigors of college? HISD Trustee Paula Harris takes a look at how HISD ensures the success of our students at the college and university level. (Thursday 8:00 p.m., Friday 10:00 a.m., Saturday 8:00 p.m.)
