American Cinema: This series explores film history and American culture through the eyes of over 150 Hollywood insiders, including Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, Michael Eisner, and many others. American Cinema connects subjects such as history, business, and English with other studies. In addition, it is a perfect vehicle for developing visual and media literacy skills and can be used as a springboard for creative writing endeavors and media production. Produced by the New York Center for Visual History in association with KCET/Los Angeles and the BBC, 1995.

Aprendos Juntos - A discussion of programs of interest to Spanish-speaking parents (Sunday 11:30 a.m., Monday 7:30 p.m.)

Arts in Every Classroom: Arts in Every Classroom: This series show classroom teachers and arts specialist using the arts in a variety of successful ways: Teachers featured in these programs include specialists in dance, music, theater, and visual art, as well as classroom teachers from kindergarten through fifth grade. Produced by Lavine Production Group in collaboration with KSA-Plus Communications and the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts.

Clearly About Learning – This program is focusing on HISD's CLEAR Curriculum and how it benefits learning in the classroom. (Friday 8:00 p.m.)

Coalition for Texas Children: Academic Youth Development – (Friday 9:00 a.m.)

Creating a Positive Image for Your School – (Monday 11:00 a.m.)

Dance Montage – A special activity designed to promote the district's Magnet Dance Program and provide students an opportunity to share dance as a learning artistic and cultural experience. (Tuesday 1:00 p.m.)

Democracy in America:

  • Citizenship Making Government Work – (Wednesday 6:00 p.m.)
  • The Constitution Fixed or Flexible – This program examines the search for balance between the original Constitution and the need to interpret and adjust it to meet the needs of changing times. It explains the original Jeffersonian-Madisonian debate, the concept of the checks and balances, and the stringent procedures for amending the Constitution. (Thursday 6:00 p.m.)
  • Federalism vs. States – This program explores federalism as a Constitutional compromise, especially in terms of present day conflicts between people who believe that power should reside primarily in the national government and those who want government authority retained within the states. (Friday 6:00 p.m.)
  • Civil Liberties – This program examines the First, Fourth, and Sixth Constitutional Amendments to show how the Bill of Rights protects individual citizens from excessive or arbitrary government interference, yet, contrary to the belief of many American, does not grant unlimited rights (Saturday 6:00 p.m.)
  • Civil Rights – This program looks at the nature of the guarantees of political and social equality, and the roles that individuals and government have played in expanding these guarantees to less protected segments of society, such as African Americans, women, and the disabled. (Sunday 6:00 p.m.)

Escape School – Safety Above All Else: HISD's number one Core Value. Escape School provides valuable tips for students who may find themselves vulnerable to abduction. A must see for all students and parents. Entertaining yet serious. (Monday 6:45 p.m.)

Faces & Places – HISD Board of Trustee Manuel Rodriguez Jr. visits with Superintendent of Schools Abelardo Saavedra. This program focuses on the Superintendent's career and future plans. (Saturday 8:30 a.m., Sunday 8:30 a.m., Monday 12:30 p.m., Tuesday 8:00 p.m., Friday 7:00 p.m.)

Meet the Author: – Noted authors share their approach to research, writing and publications.

Name That Book – Students of all ages from HISD schools are taking part in a “battle of the books” that tests both their memory and their reading comprehension skills. They have been reading from lists of up to 45 books provided by HISD Library Services weeks ago and will compete at their various grade levels. (Monday 1:00 p.m.)

NASA Education Hour – A variety of shows including daily launches and educational studies (Sunday 10:00 a.m., Friday 10:00 p.m., Saturday 2:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m.)

Predators & People – (Friday 6:45 p.m.)

Region Focus –This is a new program, produced in both English and Spanish will highlight schools and activities important to the Region Offices. (Tuesday 10:30 p.m., Friday 7:30 p.m., Sunday 12:30 p.m.)

Science FactionHands on science lessons for all ages. (Tuesday –Friday 12:15 p.m., & 8:45 p.m.)

Seasons of Life – Nearly 75 psychologists, sociologists, biologists, and anthropologists present theory, methods, and research in this exploration of the biological, psychological and social “clocks” that are the essence of life-span education. Produced by WQED/Pittsburg and the University of Michigan, 1990. (Wednesday 9:00 p.m.)

Stop Teaching our Kids to Kill – Safe & Drug Free Schools workshop. (Sunday 7:00 p.m.

Student Achievement with Paula Harris – Are our HISD graduates prepared for the rigors of college? HISD Trustee Paula Harris takes a look at how HISD ensures the success of our students at the college and university level. (Tuesday 11:00 a.m.)

Teaching Reading:

  • Becoming Readers & Writers – In Shelia Owens's kindergarten class, all students are “readers and writers from day one.” WE see them listen and respond to a story about pumpkins, create sentences using the word wall, and chant a poem on the letter D. Guided by Ms. Owen, they write a group account of the pumpkin life cycle, and then work independently on their writing (Monday 11:30 p.m.)
  • Writer's Journal – – In John Sinnett's kindergarten class, routines and classroom management techniques provide a consistent structure for learning. The students, many of whom are from Asian countries, focus on “what good readers do.” They learn “what good writers do” as Mr. Sinnett guides them through independent writing in their personal journals (Tuesday 11:30 p.m.)
  • Building Oral Language – Cindy Wilson's kindergarten class promotes oral language development and individual responsibility. The Chinese-and English-speaking students take leadership roles, guiding classmates through daily routines. Through hands-on activities, the students explore celebrations of Valentine's Day and the Chinese New Year. (Wednesday 11:30 p.m.)

Thalia Learns the Details – As the school year starts, Thalia Valdez-a kindergartner at a bilingual school-is beginning to get excited about letters. With the support of her teacher, Jim St. Clair, Thalia steadily learns the basics of reading and writing, such as one-to-one word correspondence, letter sounds, and left-to-right text. Using fine motor skills, she adds text to her inventive drawings. (Thursday 11:30 p.m.)

Values, Valor & Sacrifice: The Veterans of World War II - One-on-one conversations with members of our "Greatest Generation", whose ranks are thinning and whose sacrifices become more valuable with time. Today's youth sincerely needs and deserves their perspective.
