NOVEMBER 2009 CABLE PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

 

A+ Challenge Luncheon – The A+ Challenge annual luncheon is the culminating event for the seventh annual teacher externship. Volunteer teachers that spend the week shadowing professionals in the real work world. Teachers use this opportunity to observe and participate in the professional world of work. Hosting companies include Shell Oil, NASA, Schlumberger, The Houston Food Bank, and The City of Houston. (Friday 1:00 p.m.)

Action Algebra – Action Algebra is aligned to the 8th grade and Algebra 1 Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, which are tested on all three high school level TAKS. This program will feature Algebra's use in styles, pleasures and rewards of being involved in music. Art Osborne, better known as “Mr. Bandman, is an award Winning published Author, Composer and an Educator living in Dallas, Texas. (Monday – Wednesday 4:00 p.m.)

After School Math ShowRebroadcast interactive programs for students' grades K-8. Produced by HISD Math Department. (Thursday-Friday 4:00 p.m.)

Aprendemos Juntos - A discussion of programs of interest to Spanish-speaking parents (Monday 7:30 p.m., Thursday 7:00 p.m.)

Arts TV: A sampling of Fine Arts from ballet to music.

ASPIRE Vignettes: Accelerating Student Progress Increasing Results and Expectations. ASPIRE is an educational improvement model providing high-quality and relevant educational experiences resulting in students being college and career ready

Colonial Williamsburg:

Rebroadcast of electronic field trips exploring our early American heritage. Watch as they rediscover the secrets of the 18th century builders

Council of of Great City Schools – Panel discussion with education experts from around the country hosted by former news anchor Dan Rather. (Tuesday 10:00 a.m.)

Dance Montage – A special activity designed to promote the district's Magnet Dance Program and provide students an opportunity to share dance as a learning artistic and cultural experience (Wednesday 9:00 p.m.)

Death: A Personal Understanding - We see how ideas about death have changed historically, and how our newest definitions, like “brain death,” may not yet be adequate for encouraging all of deaths meanings.

  • Fear of Death & Dying – Despite the centuries old human struggle to "domesticate" death, the moment itself often remains frightening. A man diagnosed with AIDS and a woman dealing with recurrent cancer discusses how physical pain and fear of what may happen next affect their views of the future. (Monday 11:30 p.m.)
  • Sudden Death – special issues arise when death comes without warning. A woman widowed by the Oklahoma City bombing talks about how she handled the sudden news and loss of her husband. (Tuesday 11:30 p.m.)
  • A Child's View of Death – In this pro gram, we look at children's developing understanding of death, and their growing fears, as they react to losing a parent or sibling. One section is devoted to the special anguish of a teenager's reaction to death (Wednesday 11:30 p.m.)
  • Grief & Bereavement – In this program, the question “How long does grief last?” guides conversations with two middle –aged sister who mother recently dies, with members of a family in which the youngest son was murdered, with an adult orphaned as a child, and with a teenager who lost her mother, and may now lose her father and brother, to AIDS (Thursday 11:30 p.m.)

End of the Day Gourmet – Co-Production by ARAMARK Food Service & Houston Independent School District Chef Robert Maccarone shows parents quick nutritious and creative meals for their families. (Monday 11:30 a.m.)

Name That Book Media Awards – Students of all ages from HISD schools are taking part in a “battle of the books” that tests both their memory and their reading comprehension skills. They have been reading from lists of up to 45 books provided by HISD Library Services weeks ago and will compete at their various grade levels. (Sunday 4:00 p.m., Thursday 1:00 p.m.) 10:00 p.m.)
