Deloitte Volunteers at Hogg Middle

June 4, 2008 – This Friday at HISD’s Hogg Middle School, 350 volunteers from the audit and consulting firm of Deloitte & Touch will gather to help give the school a $15,000 makeover.

Deloitte & Touche, Hogg’s business partner, will have its annual Impact Day on Friday, June 6, from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the school (1100 Merrill, 77009).  

Deloitte will conduct seven workshops in which all “Hogg Heaven” students will be engaged. The makeover projects will be done around the school concurrently with the workshops.  The workshops will include a job shadow for sixth graders, involving students working in small groups to problem solve with the assistance of a Deloitte employee. Students will create a presentation and show their solution to the other students.  Deloitte staff will judge the reasonableness and efficiency of the students’ solutions, as well as their presentation skills, and award prizes to the top groups.

The Deloitte team also will work with students on ethics, college planning, financial planning, environment and health and fitness.

In addition to the workshops, the Deloitte employees will get their hands dirty with a makeover of the school, including:

• Painting stairwells
• Painting murals
• Painting the teachers’ room
• Redoing landscaping at the flag pole area
• Adding potting soil and flowers to planters
• Installing dry erase boards
• Cleaning up and organizing the basement
• Re-painting red poles and curbs
• Mulching and planting
• Fountain clean-up and trimming
• Organizing office files
• Building a corral for the school’s mustang

Despite the fact that school is out for the summer, about 100 Hogg students are expected at the school on Friday to participate in the workshops and projects.
