Curriculum Benchmark Assessments 2007-2008
Guidelines for Students with Special Needs

The following guidelines will be used to identify how students with special needs will participate in Curriculum Benchmark Assessments.

Students with disabilities - Teachers determine how students with disabilities will participate in CBAs for each content area and identify any required accommodations.   The individualized education program (IEP) may serve as a guide for decision-making.

Limited English Proficient students - Accommodations allowed for all LEP students should include those routinely used for instruction and assessment.  Modifications may include, but not be limited to the following: unlimited time, use of dictionary, clarification of word context, use of highlighters, and clarification/restatement/translation of instructions.
Suggested Guidelines for English Language Learners Participating in ELA CBAs
  • Beginning ESL students should not participate in CBAs.
  • ESL students integrated into the regular classroom should take CBAs with accommodations.
  • If CBAs require a textbook that is not available, participation should not be required.
  • ESL best practices would recommend that CBAs not be considered for grading purposes but used as diagnostic tools only.
