| Vertical Alignment Matrix |
Vertical Alignment Matrix documents show the progression of skills from one grade
level to the next. Each column represents a list of the grade level objectives for a
specific course. The progression of an objective can be tracked by looking across columns
(from one grade level to the next).

| The 2008-2009 Vertical Alignment Matrix includes
newly identified Power Objectives. Power objectives are objectives in each of the
foundation areas (mathematics, science, social, studies and reading/language arts) that
meet the criteria of endurance, leverage, and readiness. These objectives are crucial to
establishing a solid foundation and should be taught for greater depth and complexity.
Power objectives will be one strategy that helps our district continue to strive toward
the goal of ensuring a guaranteed and viable curriculum to support student achievement. Endurance This criterion ensures that the
objective provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in their
academic career.
Leverage This criterion ensures that the objective provides
students with the knowledge and skills needed in multiple disciplines.
Readiness This criterion ensures that the objective provides
students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the next grade, or next
level of instruction. |

The Departments of Curriculum, Instruction
and Assessment consider the HISD Power Objectives a work in progress and recommend that
teachers remain consistent and focused on teaching all HISD Objectives. However, Power
Objectives represent a subset of the required curriculum and therefore should be included
in the instructional planning process. Power Objectives serve as a guide for planning more
in-depth instruction and have the potential to serve as a springboard for professional
dialogue within professional learning communities.
