Podcasting

ipodWhat is a podcast? Simply put, it’s a digital media file that is distributed over the internet using syndication feeds. The file can then be played back on portable media players (iPods) and personal computers. A number of schools in the Houston ISD are using podcasts to facilitate learning that extends beyond the school day and the campus walls.

How Can Podcasting be used in the Classroom?

Book Review Podcast
Students create an audio book review using a computer or an iPod equipped with a voice recorder. Within the podcast, students should address important literary elements, such as the book’s theme, tone, conflicts, characterization, imagery and symbolism. Students can enhance their review with appropriate pictures or video they cull from the internet. They can also supplement their review with a (video or audio) recorded interview with the author or a segment of the author reading from his or her work.

Literary Icon Biography Podcast
Students create a biographical podcast about an author whose work they are reading. In addition to relevant facts about the author’s life, students should be advised to include information about the era in which the author lived. Students should focus on social or personal events in the author’s life that influenced his or her work.

Radio Show
Taken from the Apple website: After reading and listening to several radio dramas, pupil groups write a radio drama based on an event or period in history. Pupils write commercials that are appropriate for the radio age and create sound effects. The radio shows are recorded using an iPod and a voice recorder, imported into iTunes and then shared with the whole class.

 Learning Math with Music
Students create and record songs that illuminate a mathematical process or formula. For example, a student could write a song based on the order of operations. He or she could use an iPod with a voice recorder or a computer equipped with a microphone to record the song or rap. Students can add screen shots and non-copyright-protected music to further enhance the podcasts.

Problem-Solving Podcast
Students use video-capturing software such as Jing, Camtasia, or Smart Recorder to work through a problem. Each of these software titles come equipped with voice recorders which would allow students to narrate the solving of the problem. Students can convert these files to mp4 and install them on the iPod. Ultimately, students will collect a library of sample problems from their peers to view on their iPods and use as a study resource.

Icon of Mathematics Biography Podcast
create a biographical podcast about an historical mathematical icon. In addition to relevant facts about the figure’s life, students should include the major contributions the figure has made to the field of mathematics. Students can use screen shots and pictures to further enhance the podcast.

Periodic Table of Podcasts
Students use the internet to research the various elements of the periodic table. They then create and educational and interesting podcast on an element. This assignment can be expanded to a number of classes or the entire department so that the entire periodic table is complete with a podcast for each element.

Icon of Science Biography Podcast
Students create a biographical podcast about an iconic figure in science whose work contributed to an area of inquiry they are studying. In addition to relevant facts about the figure’s life, students should be advised to include multimedia content about the figure’s life and time, invention(s) and research to enhance the podcast.

iPod Audio Tour
Modified from the Apple website: Students use an iPod and voice recorder to create an audio tour from a trip to the zoo. They add original or non-copyright restricted music to enhance the tour. If a video camera is available, students can create a video tour to be shared with teachers and peers to did not attend the zoo trip.

Digital Science Experiments
Modified from the Apple website: Students listen to instructions prerecorded by their teacher on an iPod. They then record their science experiment using a digital camera and microphone. Finally, students edit the footage and create a movie of their science experiments using iMovie or MovieMaker.

Travel Advertisement Podcast
Students create an audio/visual travel advertisement on a particular country or region. Within the podcast, students should address the five themes of geography by speaking to the country’s location, place, human/environment interaction, movement and region. Students can enhance their advertisement with appropriate pictures, videos and maps they cull from the internet.

Historical Icon Biography Podcast
Students create a biographical podcast about a historical figure whom they are studying. In addition to relevant facts about the figure’s life, students should be advised to include multimedia content about the figure’s life and time to enhance the podcast.
