Mathematics Initiatives
The purpose of the Mathematics
Initiative is to improve student achievement in mathematics. This will be accomplished by
targeting activities in three major strands: (1) curriculum alignment; (2) student
environment; and (3) professional development. During phase one of this mathematics initiative,
all teachers of mathematics, grades 5-8, were provided numerous opportunities to
participate in professional development activities designed to improve the teaching and
learning of mathematics. Surveys and comments on evaluation forms from Mathematics
Institute activities provided input from teachers about their priorities for their
professional development in mathematics. This year many of those successful strategies
will continue with modifications indicated from feedback from teachers. The focus of
summit sessions and other professional development activities is determined through
analysis of test score data.
Initiative Components:
University courses for
Algebra I teachers, middle school and elementary teachers are being offered, or will be
offered in the spring. We continue to support developing Lead Teachers in the areas of
curriculum and instruction.
Staff development
opportunities include TEXTEAM training for grades 6-8, Algebra I, and Algebra II.
From 5:00-6:00 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, the After School Algebra Show, in conjunction with Media Services,
is produced and broadcast from HSPVA for students across the district. On each show a
teacher presents a short lesson on selected topics from the Algebra curriculum, then the
phone lines are opened for student questions. |
