High-Frequency Word Evaluation

Parent Reading with ChildDuring 2007-2008 school year, the Houston Independent School district revised promotion standards for first-grade and second-grade students.

As part of current promotion requirements, students must read aloud words from the High-Frequency Word Evaluation (HFWE).
Parents play an important role in helping their child become a good reader.

Parents are encouraged to read to their children and to have their children read to them daily. Additionally, parents can use flashcards and have students recognize high-frequency words in books and in the environment.

Requirements include:

  • a 70-percent course average in reading, language arts, math, and either science or social studies and a 70-percent average of all courses
  • at least an 80-percent score on the High Frequency Word Evaluation
  • a grade-equivalent within one year of the child's grade level on Stanford 10 or Aprenda 3

High-frequency Word Evaluation Process
Parents should receive a letter from the superintendent outlining promotion standards and the High Frequency Word Evaluation. Principals will send this letter along with a set of cards to parents of first and second graders in late October or early November. Teachers will incorporate words on the high-frequency list in their daily instruction in preparation for the spring administration of the High-Frequency Word Evaluation.
