Science Fair - SRC Process

1) Adult Sponsor/Safety Assessment Form (1)
Adult sponsor should be the same person listed on the research plan. Acid rain, insecticide and herbicide toxicity studies using live vertebrates (including ducks) are prohibited. Tissue and invertebrate studies are recommended as alternate models for such testing. Required for all students.

2) Research Plan (1A)
The adult sponsor may be teacher, parent, or other adult. State what question is going to be answered and the hypothesis (If ... Then ... Include details of safety measures, animal care measures, survey questions and populations, if applicable. Encyclopedias and textbooks are not considered major sources. Use a correct format for a bibliography (refer to page 14). Required for all students.

3)   Approval Form (1B)
Except for places requiring IRB signature, leave sections 2, 3, and 4 blank. Required for all students.

4)  Registered Research Institutional/Industrial Setting Form (1C)
The scientist supervising the student research conducted in a registered research institution or industrial setting must complete this form. This form must be available with the students project approval forms.

5)  Qualified Scientist Form (2)
With the exception of the student's name, school, and title of project, the qualified scientist must complete this certification. A vitae or summary of experience covered by the student's research plan must be attached to this certification. Projects involving animals, controlled substances and pathogens, rDNA, tissues, and humans, including surveys require this form

6)  Designated Supervisor Form (3)
If a Qualified Scientist is required for this project but is unable to supervise the project, the Designated Adult Supervisor can do so provided he/she is thoroughly familiar with the student’s project. The Designated Adult Supervisor does not need to have an advanced degree. The Adult Project Supervisor may also act as the Designated Supervisor if trained to do so.

7) Human Subjects Form (4A)
This certificate is required for all projects involving human subjects including surveys, and for projects that might involve violation of privacy act, or potential risk (physiological projects, sensitive surveys). The bottom of this certification must be completed by the IRB at the school level prior to experimentation. The teacher of the student cannot sign as the science teacher. If a survey is part of the Project, a copy of the survey must accompany this certification.

8)   Informed Consent Form (4B)
Required for all projects involving human subjects. The bottom of this certification is to be completed by the subject prior to experimentation.

9)   Nonhuman Vertebrate Animal Form (5)
Pet store animals may not be used for any invasive procedures or any severe nutritional studies that may result in physiological deficiencies. The maximum permissible weight lost or growth retardation of any experimental or control animal is 15%. Animals may not be sacrificed for purpose of the project.

10)  Human and Animal Tissue Form (6)
Required for all projects using viable fresh tissue, organs, human or animal parts, including blood, blood products, teeth, primary cell cultures, and body fluids (plant tissue is excluded). (SRC approval required before experimentation).

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Environmental sampling (air, water, mud and soil) projects in which culturing of unknown organisms is the object of the project or when samples would be likely to contain pathogens or hazardous materials procedures that are invasive and nutritional studies with potential physiological symptoms require SRC approval. Additional certification(s) may be required.

Consumable alcohol and tobacco products and drugs (prescription or illegal)
When used in projects, substance must be obtained by and used under the direct supervision of adult project supervisor.

SUMMARY OF SRC DO'S AND DON'TS

  1. The starting date of research is "when approved." No student can begin until they receive approval.
  2. The Research Plan 1A must be clear. Anyone should be able to replicate the project from the information provided.
  3. All bibliographies require a minimum of three "hard" sources. Encyclopedias, CD-ROMS, and Internet sites are not "hard" sources. Follow the bibliographic format provided on page 14.
  4. Any vertebrate research needs to have an animal care reference listed in the bibliography.
  5. Chemicals are substances that the student could not purchase by himself or herself, including consumable alcohol and tobacco products.
  6. In working with vertebrates, no deficiency can be studied. A student's project cannot withhold any needed substance from any vertebrate.
  7. Survey projects must include the survey with the SRC papers submitted. The campus IRB committee must determine the risk involved.
  8. Include a resume or vita with the Qualified Scientist Form (2).
  9. Use of soil and/or mud requires SRC approval.
  10. Water usage is limited to tap, distilled, or bottled water. Pond, rain, ocean, river, ditch, or standing water require SRC approval.
