Changing the way we think about college.

College-Bound Culture
To make college an expectation or option for all students, HISD educates students and parents about college opportunities and requirements beginning in elementary school, creates success plans for high-school students, and prepares all students for college or the workforce.

College Credits
Students in high school can earn college credits through Advanced Placement and dual-credit courses. Many colleges accept the courses for credit, saving students and their families thousands of dollars in tuition costs.

Early College High Schools
These innovative programs allow students to earn an associate's degree and a high-school diploma simultaneously.

PSAT for All
HISD requires tenth-graders to take the PSAT test as a way to enroll more students in Advanced Placement classes and prepare them for the SAT reasoning test required by most colleges.

College-Awareness Programs for Parents of Elementary-School Students
HISD provides activities and workshops for parents to help them gain an understanding of the educational opportunities available to their children.

AVID Program
The Advancement Via Individual Determination program provides in-school academic support in grades 512 that prepares academically average students for college eligibility and success. The focus is on minority, rural, low-income, and other students who do not have a college-going tradition in their families.

Coherent Sequence of Courses
As part of HISD’s Career and Technology Education (CATE) program, students who are participating in a coherent sequence of CATE courses or are enrolled in a Tech Prep High School plan of study may elect to take classes that can prepare them for college and technical careers and teach them skills that lead to industry certification and/or employment.
