Parent Rights and Responsibilities
HISD created a set of Parent Rights and Responsibilities that outlines district policies and guidelines and what parents need to do to help the district educate their children.
College-Awareness Programs for Parents of Elementary-School Students
HISD provides activities and workshops for parents to help them gain an understanding of the educational opportunities available to their children.
Connect-ED Telephone Message System
HISD installed a new electronic phone-message system that allows the district to contact tens of thousands of parents and employees in minutes with important information, such as major new programs and the closing of schools during weather emergencies. The system can also be used to conduct surveys, with respondents answering questions using the telephone keypad. |
Increasing PTA/PTO Membership
With "Parents Are Partners" one of the district's Core Values, HISD is stepping up its efforts to get more parents involved in their schools' parent-teacher associations/organizations.
Parent Prep Academy
A variety of training classes increases the visibility and accessibility of programs available to parents and builds capacity in parents to help them be more effective as partners in school and district activities.
Parent Training in Technology
HISD joined forces with the Mexican Institute of Greater Houston and Tecnológico de Monterrey (a prestigious university in Mexico) to offer Spanish-speaking adults a 100-hour distance-learning computer course at their children's school so they could improve their job skills and become more involved in their children's schoolwork.
